چکیده

We present wide-field images of the quadruple gravitational lenses B1422+231 and MGJ0414+0534 obtained from global Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations at 8.4GHz on 23 November 1997. We present also a lens model for MGJ0414+0534, which reproduces the core positions and flux densities of the VLBI images, combining a singular isothermal ellipsoid with external shear, and a singular isothermal sphere to represent, respectively, the main lens galaxy and its neighbor, a faint galaxy near one of the images. Introduction. We have embarked on a project of multi-epoch observations of the quadruple images of the two gravitationally lensed objects B1422+231 and MGJ0414+0534 to compare possible structural changes in the lensed images and measure possible shifts in the relative positions of the sub-images. Here we present our images from the first epoch observations on 23 November 1997.

Proper Motions of Vlbi Lenses, Inertial Frames and the Evolution of Peculiar Velocities

Precise determinations of the image positions in quad gravitational lenses using VLBI can be used to measure the transverse velocity of the lens galaxy and the observer. The typical proper motions are as yr 1 , so the time scale to measure the motion is ten years. By measuring the dipole of the proper motions in an ensemble of lenses we can set limits on the deviation of the inertial frame deen...

Multiple Imaging by Gravitational Waves

Gravitational waves act like lenses for the light propagating through them. This phenomenon is described using the vector formalism employed for ordinary gravitational lenses, which was proved to be applicable also to a non{stationary spacetime, with the appropriate modi cations. In order to have multiple imaging an approximate condition analogous to that for ordinary gravitational lenses must ...

Rotation in Gravitational Lenses

Gravitational lensing deflects light. A single lens deflector can only shear images, but cannot induce rotations. Multiple lens planes can induce rotations. Such rotations can be observed in quadruply imaged sources, and can be used to distinguish between two proposed solutions of the flux anomaly problem: substructures in lensing galaxies vs large scale structure. We predict the expected amoun...

The Influence of Central Black Holes on Gravitational Lenses

Recent observations indicate that many if not all galaxies host massive central black holes. In this paper we explore the influence of black holes on the lensing properties. We model the lens as an isothermal ellipsoid with a finite core radius plus a central black hole. We show that the presence of the black hole substantially changes the critical curves and caustics. If the black hole mass is...

PKS 1830−211: A Possible Compound Gravitational Lens

Measurements of the properties of gravitational lenses have the power to tell us what sort of universe we live in. The brightest known radio Einstein ring/gravitational lens PKS 1830−211 (Jauncey et al. 1991), whilst obscured by our Galaxy at optical wavelengths, has recently been shown to contain absorption at the millimetre waveband at a redshift of 0.89 (Wiklind & Combes 1996a). We report th...
